III. Individual Speech Guidelines, Including Academic Freedom

The role of universities in the community is to encourage the free flow of thoughts and ideas essential to higher education. Therefore, while Adelphi University does not encourage offensive or insensitive speech, principles of academic freedom may limit the University’s ability to restrict speech that is germane to academic subjects and pedagogically appropriate to those subjects. However, when speech rises to the level of discrimination, harassment (including sexual misconduct, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking), and/or retaliation as defined herein, it cannot be protected by academic freedom and will be considered to be a violation of this Policy.
